When is the Best Time to Build a Custom Home?

December 9, 2016

Building a custom home is a big commitment for buyers in terms of time. Unlike purchasing an existing home, which is a process that typically is accomplished in a couple months, building a new home takes significantly longer. With this in mind, many homebuilding customers wonder, “When is the best time to build a custom home?”

There’s no right or wrong answer. What’s best for one customer or homebuilder may not work as well for another. To decide, it’s important that you understand the multiple steps of the custom home design process. Securing a lot, finalizing blueprints, selecting customization options, and getting permits can take 2-3 months. Constructing the home itself can take from 5-7 months depending on the size of the home and the customization selections. It can take even longer if you request changes after the building process has begun. Obviously, with a timeline that takes up half the year or longer, there are going to be some considerations that may influence your decision of when you want to begin building.

The most popular time to begin new home construction is in the spring. This is when your homebuilder will have the best weather in which to work. As long as it’s not raining, you won’t need to worry about weather-related delays. Many families prefer spring and summer construction so that they can be moved in before the start of the school year and be settled in before the first snow falls. However, it is a misconception that construction can’t take place in the winter. Builders can work throughout the year. Just keep in mind that building in the winter will lengthen the timeframe because the days are shorter and snowfall will cause delays.

If you’re looking for some additional savings, you may find it advantageous to build during the fall and winter months. Because spring is the busy season for home buying and construction, it’s also the season when the prices of building materials are likely to be the highest. In addition, most homebuilders are less busy as winter approaches. You may be able to get a better price on construction from builders looking for projects.
